John and Susan raised their now adult son and daughter in Frederick County, Virginia, where they were very active in community activities like:
KARATE
John spent ten years as a volunteer karate instructor with the Stonebrook Kenpo Karate program. He feels very strongly in teaching both children and adults what they need to know to protect themselves. The program also helped kids to learn leadership qualities that they can take into adulthood.
CHURCH
John is a true believer in the second amendment and works security for his church. John and Susan feel very thankful to belong to a small church in the Back Creek district.
APPLE BLOSSOM
John and Susan have spent many years supporting different Apple Blossom events. John is currently a co-chair for the Apple Blossom Veterans dinner event. He is also a beekeeper and does competition BBQ contests. John has supported several local charity events with his BBQ skills.
Swim League
John spent over twenty years supporting the local summer swim league as an IT support volunteer. This included working with Frederick County Parks & Rec to help modernize the scoring system from a paper system to an electronic system for scoring. The Jewell family was a fixture for years at these events. John and Susan feel that this kind of atmosphere is what helps children to learn not only personal goals, but a chance to grow as a team member, and instill the qualities for our children to carry on in life.

John retired in the fall of 2019 from the United States Senate after a career that spanned almost 40 years. His last job was the Assistant Sergeant at Arms/Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Senate. John was responsible for all Information Technology support, Office Equipment support, Cellular support, and Cybersecurity support for the U.S. Senate. That included over 300 full time employees and over 200 contractors, over 430 sites throughout the United States, Capitol Hill offices and offsite locations. His budget was over 100 million dollars, including salaries. One point John likes to make is he has been blessed with the opportunity to grow and learn throughout his career. John started his career as a messenger in the U.S. Senate printing department. Attending college at night to obtain a degree in Business Management. He continued his career earning many different certifications in technology and services. John throughout his career has tried to live by the motto to “respect all”. John and Susan taught their children to respect all people, to be courteous and listen to what folks have to say. We would remind them to engage your brain first, then your mouth. I have always followed that principal in my business and personal life.
